The West End United Methodist Church has been worshiping in their historic sanctuary since 1940. Deeply rooted in traditional worship, the church has remained committed to preserving its heritage while thoughtfully embracing new technology. For more than a decade, West End has partnered with Mankin Media to steward that balance, building a trusted relationship through multiple phases of technology integration.
The dream for West End began over 10 years ago. They began to thoughtfully bring the church into a new era of communication and engagement without compromising the character of the historic space. Early phases of the partnership included: cameras for live streaming, televisions installed throughout classrooms, as well as audio upgrades across the campus. The DREAM for this most recent project was to deliver a state-of-the-art audio and lighting experience that served the congregation while preserving the beauty and integrity of a sanctuary that has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years.
The primary challenge was integration without intrusion. The sanctuary’s historic architecture and aesthetic required a solution that would improve clarity and intelligibility for the audience. And respect the visual and architectural heritage of the space in order to complement, not compete with, the traditional worship experience. Mankin collaborated closely with church leadership, understanding the liturgical priorities, and designing a system that would feel invisible yet perform exceptionally well.
The most recent phase of work focused on a comprehensive upgrade to the sanctuary experience with a state-of-the-art audio system designed for clarity and coverage. The integration of new lighting systems to enhance visibility while maintaining a traditional aesthetic. All carefully placed and tuned to remain visually unobtrusive within the historic environment. This work builds on years of prior system deployments, including video infrastructure, classroom AV, and control systems. All to create a cohesive, campus-wide technology ecosystem. The impact was immediate and meaningful. Congregants who previously struggled to hear can now clearly engage with the service. In some cases, individuals who relied on assisted listening devices no longer need them. Just as importantly, the system feels at home in the space, supporting worship without distracting from it.
West End’s story is not a single project. It’s an ongoing partnership. A relationship spanning more than a decade. Together, the partnership is not just maintaining systems—it is equipping West End to worship faithfully for the next 20, 30, even 45 years, just as they have since 1940.
